Trauma & Mindful Curiosity - Norma Howes & Deborah Robinson

North Wales Border – Glyndwr University, Wrexham - Saturday 3rd December 2011 

10.00am - 4.30pm

This day workshop will focus on working mindfully with children.  It will provide a clear theoretical understanding of the impact of trauma on children and how to develop and use mindful curiosity in the child and the worker.  

The workshop will include the following sessions:

• ‘Here and now’ – grounding, orienting and being present techniques and how to use these in other places.

• ‘Transforming the problem’ – the behaviour is the child’s answer to a problem.  Transform the problem will resolve the behaviour.

• ‘Building a brain’ – teaching to and practically using neurobiology with children.

• ‘Living a balanced life’ – taking mindful care of you.

This workshop will offer challenge, perception, insight and awareness through information presentation, participation, exercises and discussion.

Norma Howes is a Social Worker, Child Forensic Psychologist and Sensorimotor Psychotherapist.  Norma is involved in training police, social workers, health and education staff on all aspects of childhood trauma and abuse.   She has a private practice working with adults and children most of whom have experienced severe childhood trauma.  She has worked in the field of trauma, mental health and dissociation for more than twenty years and has researched the impact of dissociation on memory and the implications this has for both civil and criminal court proceedings.

Norma was also a member of a Child Trauma Team one day a week for twelve years where she was involved in both assessment and therapeutic services for children who had experienced Type 1 and Type 2 trauma.   She has a special interest in the impact of trauma, abuse and dissociation on attachment and consequent behaviours following child abuse and domestic violence.

Deborah Robinson, MSW, BSc, DipSW - Deborah Robinson has been a residential worker and social worker for 10 years.  Deborah was a Social Work manager in a secure adolescent psychiatric hospital for 4 years and spent 2 years in a CAMHS Team.  Deborah now works in a community based multi-discipline team focussed on early intervention and prevention.  A major part of her role is providing consultation and training on the impact of trauma on children's development.  Deborah is a keen advocate for the reframing of behaviour as the solution, not the problem. Like Norma she has completed the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (Trauma) and EMDR training.
